Global Peace Summit: An Initiative for Global Stability and Commitment to Sovereignty and Peace
Amid ongoing conflict and global instability, Ukraine is making significant strides towards establishing a comprehensive peace framework. The need for peace is dire not just for Ukraine and Europe but for the entire world. Despite more than 200 rounds of negotiations since 2014, including in the Normandy format, and over 10 ceasefire agreements, the conflict continues.
In January 2024, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine and Viola Amherd, President of Switzerland during their joint press conference, had extensive discussions and develop a unified approach to ending the war in Ukraine. In April 2024 the parties agreed to hold the inaugural Global Peace Summit near Lucerne in June 2024.
Inaugural Peace Summit Set for June 2024 in Switzerland
The summit aims to bring together world leaders from 150 countries to discuss diverse perspectives on the peace process and initiate the development of a collective peace framework aimed at restoring peace in Ukraine. The inaugural Global Peace Summit is expected to reaffirm the commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of states within their internationally recognized borders. It seeks to restore peace for Ukraine and ensure global stability.
Key topics to be addressed will include the inadmissibility of nuclear weapons use and ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities, global food security and humanitarian issues, including the exchange of prisoners and the return of illegally detained, deported, and displaced persons, especially children.
Involving Timor-Leste in the Peace Process
Switzerland has sent out 160 invitations to the upcoming Global Peace Summit, aiming to encourage more countries from the Global South to participate. “Roughly half of the countries that said they would take part were non-European, and the list of attendees is likely to keep changing until the last minute,” said Viola Amherd, President of Switzerland.
Ukraine is actively seeking to engage Timor-Leste in the peace process, and Timor-Leste’s participation in the summit is seen as a valuable addition, emphasizing the interconnectedness of regional stability and global peace efforts. Ukraine believes that Timor-Leste’s involvement will bring fresh perspectives and strengthen the collaborative spirit necessary for resolving the conflict:
“Both Ukraine and Timor-Leste have faced significant challenges on their paths to sovereignty and peace. The bond between our nations is strengthened by a shared commitment to resilience and the pursuit of freedom.
Ukraine sincerely hopes for the participation of Timor-Leste and the presence of the Honourable José Alexandre Xanana Gusmão, Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste at the Summit.
The inclusion of Timor-Leste and other nations highlights the inclusive and comprehensive approach that Ukraine advocates for in achieving peace,” said Mr. Denys Mykhailiuk, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Ukraine in Malaysia and Head of the non-resident Mission of Ukraine to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.
